James Connolly Memorial Hospital Bridge

The James Connolly Memorial Hospital Access Road links an existing roundabout on the N3 (Scott’s Roundabout) to an existing roundabout in the James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown.

The road passes over the ecologically sensitive Tolka valley. To minimise the impact on the valley it was decided to clear span over the Tolka river using a two span semi-integral bridge.

The bridge is 63 metres long and 11.8 metres wide with spans of 31.4 metres and 31.6 metres. The bridge deck consists of 12 No U12 precast prestressed bridge beams.

The design of the bridge had to take into account some major constraints which included facilitating the proposed N3/M50 junction upgrade and the close proximity of the main foul sewer serving Blanchardstown.

The appearance of the bridge to those enjoying the Tolka valley was important and the bridge elements were designed to make use of the ability to provide attractive shapes and textures with in-situ concrete. In addition the attention to detail in the design and construction enabled attractive features like the lamp standard supports to extend easily out of the edge parapet.

The ability of concrete elements to be precast and prestressed to facilitate minimal footprint in the valley as well as to be moulded in situ contributed to the clients satisfaction with this bridge project.

The bridge has been accepted for the 2008 Irish Concrete Society Award.
