DCU School of Nursing

This building comprises large lecture theatres, classrooms, general teaching space and a simulated learning environment which is full hospital ward environment with full facilities for the practice training of student nurses. The whole building is laid out around a serpentine atrium which is fully glazed. There is a large feature circular lecture theatre with an extensive cantilevered building over at 2nd floor level. This is achieved using a deep cantilevered transfer slab over the large lecture theatre.

Precast hollowcore units were used on the rake to achieve the large lecture theatres required. A loadbearing masonry wall was used below the lecture theatres to carry these floors. The foundations were strip footings with an undercroft area left due to the sloping nature of the site and the depths to the boulder clay.
