O’Connor Sutton Cronin were appointed as Consulting Civil/Structural Engineers for a new Accident & Emergency department on the Our Lady of Lourdes(OLOL) campus in Drogheda.
The new standalone 4-storey building has a total floor area of c.4000m2 with a new A & E department at ground floor level, two floors of wards above and a critical care unit (CCU) on the third floor. The new building has two newly constructed link corridors to the existing hospital building and it also has a basement level connection between the new and existing buildings.
The new structure is an in-situ concrete building. The superstructure consists of a profiled ribbed slab spanning between reinforced concrete (RC) beams and columns. The ribbed slab was chosen to allow flexibility for future expansion and new services within the building and also provide a robust floor. The link corridors between the new and existing buildings are propped cantilever steel frames which are isolated structurally from the existing building.
In addition to the new A&E development, OCSC have also been retained as Civil/Structural Engineers for several other projects on the campus including:
• New Education Centre
• Medical Residents Building
• New Medical Assessment Unit
• Technical Advisor for New Mortuary & Post Mortem
• Technical Advisor for New Acute Psychiatric Unit
• New Car Park at Cross Lanes
