OCSC were appointed as framework partners by the NHS Trust for the extension of St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London. We were the consulting engineers involved in the successful delivery of the Ruth Miles Haematology Day Care Unit which involved the construction of an additional floor to an existing 6 storey building.
The construction of the new day care unit took place directly above a live operating theatre and linked up to the existing live hospital wards. A thorough investigation on the existing building structure was completed and OCSC could justify the construction of this new extension without the requirement for strengthening works to the existing building’s sub-structure or superstructure. OCSC arranged with the contractor strict Health and Safety protocol to prevent the spread of Aspergillus infection. It was agreed that the crainage of heavy materials on to the roof of the operating theatre and all heavy structural works were to take place outside the hours of the operating theatre.
