The works involved the removal of the existing steel linkspan structure and its replacement with a new 34m wide by 27.5m long linkspan which is one of the widest in Europe and can accommodate the Humbermax class of vehicle. The linkspan is operated via hydraulic lifting towers and control buildings.
The scheme included the design and construction of a piled bank seat and a piled caisson walls to the lifting towers. The pier and ferries were also protected by Yokohama fenders. The 260T steel linkspan was produced by Vogen in Gdynia Poland.
