O’Connor Sutton Cronin were appointed consulting civil/structural engineers on this new prestigious library development by Waterford City Council.
It involved the intricate refurbishment of the listed Carnegie Library together with a modern new build extension.
Site access was extremely tight and hence significantly impacted design approach for this new build. With the structure being more than a century old there were some surprises in it but all were successfully addressed and overcome. The programme recognised the complexity of the work and the project started in February 2001 and finished on time in September 2005.
The library is an award winning building and was part of the Irish Architecture Foundation’s “Lives of Spaces” exhibition in 2008 at the Venice Biennale.
