Ireland

The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) in Ireland plays a crucial role in the ecosystem, contributing to seed dispersal and influencing forest regeneration. They are protected under the Wildlife Act (1976) and Wildlife (Amendment) Acts (2000 & 2010) and the Bern Convention (Appendix III). As a native species, it has faced challenges from the introduction of the non-native grey squirrel, which outcomes in food resources and transmits diseases to the red squirrel. They prefer coniferous forests, but they are adaptable and can establish habitats in mixed deciduous and coniferous woodlands, large gardens, and parks. These areas offer an ample supply of their primary food source, mainly consisting of seeds.

Pine Martens (Martes martes) are native to Ireland and can be found in various habitats, including woodlands, forests, and rural areas. They are protected in Ireland by both national and international legislation. The habitats they are particularly associated with are mixed woodlands that provide both suitable den sites and access to their primary food sources. Den sites can include rock crevices, tree cavities, subterranean burrows, buildings (abandoned or occupied), old bird nests, squirrel dreys and log piles. Pine Martens play a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem's balance by helping control pest populations by preying on rodents.

Otters (Lutra lutra) are charismatic and ecologically significant residents of Ireland, contributing to the country's rich biodiversity. These semi-aquatic mammals are top predators in freshwater ecosystems, helping to maintain balanced fish populations. During construction activities, special attention must be given to the potential presence of otters, as they inhabit waterways and use holts (dens) in riverbanks.
